January 31, 2009
Centerville High School near Dayton, Ohio earned first place honors at the Greater Cincinnati Regional Science Bowl, held January 31, over a field of twenty-four high schools science teams representing 19 high schools in the Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus areas. The annual science competition was held at the Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.
The Centerville team answered questions on biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, astronomy and mathematics during the round-robin followed by a double elimination tournament. The Centerville Science Team will represent the Greater Cincinnati Region and advance to the 19th Annual Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl, held from April 30 to May 5, in the Washington D.C. area.
DOE launched its National Science bowl competition in 1991 to encourage high school students to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields. The National Science Bowl’s high school competition now involves more than 13,000 students. It is the only science competition in the United States sponsored by a Federal agency.
The Greater Cincinnati Regional Science Bowl was hosted by the Cincinnati-based DOE Environmental Management Consolidated Business Center that provides contracting, technical and administrative support to DOE’s Environmental Management projects across the county. This marked the 18th consecutive year for the local contest.
“The Scope of Your Dreams” was the selected theme for the 2009 Science Bowl that recognized the 400th anniversary of the telescope and the International Year of Astronomy. Highlighting the telescope anniversary was special quest speaker, Dean Regas, the Outreach Astronomer for the Cincinnati Observatory Center.
In 2008, the Sycamore High School Science Bowl team won the Greater Cincinnati Regional Science Bowl.
